Quizzo Night Success!

Over 10 teams celebrated the holiday season with a few games of Holiday Quizzo at the Community Arts Center.  Proceeds from the event brought in $532 and four boxes of household items for the day center.  Special thanks to Jon Mackey for organizing and running the event to benefit Family Promise of Lycoming County.

  

A new look at Thanksgiving

Director, Melissa Magargle speaks to youth groups from St. Boniface and St. Lawrence about the meaning of Thanksgiving and helping families in need.  The youth donated two large boxes of canned goods and turkeys for former guests to have a happy Thanksgiving dinner.

   

Gifts that Give Hope

Penn College Human Services Class brings the arts to Williamsport and raises money for many organizations, including Family Promise.  Organizers sell items from “10,000 Villages” and held a Gifts that Give Hope Alternative Gift Fair for 8 local non-profit organizations.  Patrons can purchase gift certificates in $10, $25 and $50 denominations that are used to help guests in the program.  For more information, go to www.giftsthatgivehope.org/williamsport.

 

Community Effort For A Community Problem!

Lycoming County Commissioner Jeff Wheeland presents Pastor Kenneth Elkin and Becky Miller Pryor with a check for $985.00 for Family Promise of Lycoming County from the county office workers.  Family Promise of Lycoming County is truly an effort of the entire community on behalf of those families who are struggling with loss of affordable, sustainable housing.  Thank you to the Lycoming County office workers for joining in this work; it is valued and appreciated.

 

2011 National Conference

Executive Director, Melissa Magargle and Board President, Mary Ann Vance, attend 2011 Family Promise 11th National Conference “Moving Mountains” from Sept 22-26.  “I learned more in a day than I could have ever imagined.  It was a tremendous experience and well worth every penny” stated Melissa Magargle.

 

2011 Paddle and Silent Auction

Over 50 people enjoyed food, beverages and a little good natured fun at the 2nd annual Family Promise of Lycoming County Silent and Paddle Auction.  Auction goers enjoyed bidding on over 50 different baskets ranging from an fitness basket to school supplies or bedding.  In addition to this, players raised their hands, or paddles to bid with a quarter on a variety of prizes from hand made jewelry to a 2 hour limo ride and a bottle of wine.  All in all, we raised approximately $3400.00.  We hope next year is even bigger and better.

2011 Little League World Series Food Vending and Parade

 

Family Promise volunteers work at Little League World Series selling everything from pretzels to sausage sandwiches.  With local team “Keystone” playing in the finals, it was a busy year for all Little League fans and volunteers.  Over 50 people helped out at the series making money for Family Promise. 

2011 Little League Parade

Family Promise takes another swing at the Little League World Series Grand Slam Parade with the names of our successful graduates proudly displayed on the wall at the back of the float.  With Melissa Magargle; Director, sharing a meal with the children in the back of the truck, many other volunteers and guests walked the parade route or rode on the float designed to look like a home and back yard.   Thank you to all the volunteers, guests and parade watchers for another great year.   See our page on Facebook to see all of the pictures from the parade at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Family-Promise-of-Lycoming-County-Inc/135655243195593.

        Kid’s First Friday

Patty Fox; Board Secretary and Melissa Magargle; Executive Director, enjoy the 4th Annual Kids’ First Friday event in downtown Williamsport on August 5, 2011.  With a little help from above, the evening was rain free and many local families enjoyed activities presented by local businesses and non-profit agencies.  At the Family Promise table kids enjoyed coloring their favorite picture of “home”.

Lemonaide, get your Lemonaide! 

This is what you heard when you stepped out of your car at this particular yard sale.  Makenna and Samantha Magargle are following the lead of many other local youth who have stepped up to help others.   The two raised $14.77.   Sara Golembeski and Emma Schoonmaker donated $8 from their lemonaid sale last year.  Sadie and Taylor Wentzel donated $6.95 from their allowances to help the cause as well.

This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was held on April 15th at the Genetti Hotel and Suites.  The evening included a guest speaker, former guest, Jeff Twist, presentations from the President of the Board of Directors, Mary Ann Vance, and Director, Melissa Magargle.   A DJ provided the entertainment for the evening and the guests enjoyed a video presentation of the “Year in Review”.  Attendees also got the opportunity to win a variety of donated prizes or the floral centerpieces as a special thank you to all that they do for the organization.  The guests were served by local celebritys including Frank Girardi, Robert Donato, Gerry Fausnaught, Tonya Anderson, and Mayor Gabe Campana.  Thank you to those that helped out and made it a huge success.

                       

Family Promise launches “Houses for Change” project to raise awareness awareness of homelessness and provide funds to help homeless families.  It offers congregations, schools and other organizations a “teachable moment” regarding the causes and effects of homelessness — and provides a hands-on opportunity for participants to make a difference.   It is a fun and creative project for children to help local homeless families.  Click here for more details.
